Huntington Beach Bathroom Renovation: A Coastal Refresh with Deep Ocean Blues

When designing spaces for clients, my goal isn’t to impose my own style—it’s about crafting a home that feels true to their vision. This transitional coastal bathroom renovation in Huntington Beach was all about bringing in cool, ocean-inspired tones while striking a balance with warmth, natural light, and texture.

The Before: A Beige-Dominated Space in Need of a Refresh

For years, my client’s bathroom was filled with warm beige tones, but she was ready for a change. She wanted a cool, refreshing palette, inspired by deep ocean blues, to create a space that felt serene and modern.

One of the biggest challenges? Lighting. The space had limited natural light, which meant we had to be intentional about using deep blues without making the bathroom feel too dark or closed in.

The Design Plan: Balancing Cool Tones, Light & Warmth

To achieve her vision without overwhelming the space, I carefully layered rich blues, natural textures, and reflective surfaces to ensure the room still felt bright and inviting.

✔ Offset Deep Blue Subway Tile – Wrapping key walls for a bold, oceanic statement.
✔ Carrara Marble Flooring – A timeless, elegant foundation that enhances the space with soft veining and natural light reflectivity.
✔ Quartz Slab Vanity & Shower Seat – Clean and seamless, adding a luxe touch while subtly brightening the space.
✔ Van Deusen Blue Vanity – A deep, moody blue that grounds the space beautifully without overpowering it.
✔ Polished Nickel Fixtures – Elevates the design with warmth and subtle reflectivity to help bounce light throughout the room.
✔ Natural Wood Mirror & Accessories – Essential to warming up the cool-toned palette while adding contrast.
✔ Strategic Lighting Choices – Opting for sconces with a soft glow helped compensate for the limited daylight, ensuring the space still felt open and airy.

The result? A coastal retreat that feels both rejuvenating and inviting—exactly what she envisioned.

The After: Cool, Coastal, and Balanced

By blending deep blues with natural wood tones, polished nickel accents, and Carrara marble flooring, we achieved a look that feels calm, timeless, and effortlessly coastal. Thoughtful lighting placement and material choices ensured that even with darker hues, the space remained bright and welcoming.

Designing Outside My Typical Style

While this isn’t the exact aesthetic I gravitate toward, this project reinforced the power of designing for the client’s needs rather than my own preferences. It was a fun challenge to step into while still ensuring the space felt intentional, elevated, and timeless.
